Sliabh An Iarainn Hill Walking
Co. Leitrim, Ireland
Guarding the southeastern shores of Lough Allen, 585m-high Slieve Anierin is one of the best known summits in Leitrim.
The peak is commonly known by it's Irish name, Sliabh An Iarainn, which translates as 'the iron mountain' and provides a clue
to the role the hill has played in recent history.
An ancient Irish legend relates that the Tuatha De Danann landed in Ireland in this very place:they decended in a thick mist and on discovering iron, forged metal weapons. With their superior armour, they then set to battle and defeated the Formorian tribe at the battle of Magh Tuireadh.
Aghacashel, the starting point for most of the walking trails, is situated between Drumshanbo and Ballinamore (N3 to Ballinamore, N4 to Carrick on Shannon)
There are several marked walking routes around Slieve Anierin, which are detailed on a map board at Aghacashel Post Office.
Walk Cards are also available at the shop/post office with the distance and time listed for each walk,
brief notes on route finding and local and natural history.
Walks ranging from a short stroll of 20-30 minutes to longer outings of a couple of hours
Walkers will stand in awe at the breathtaking panoramic views over the West and Midlands of Ireland, or wonder at the amount and variety of flora and fauna encountered; foxes, hares, rabbits, badgers, ravens and Peregrine Falcons. There are walks each month. Please telephone in advance to confirm.
